I lost 20 kg after my pregnancy without a single supplement pill. Makhana wasn't the hero of that story — sattu was. But makhana solved the problem that ruins most Indian weight-loss attempts: the 6 PM snack.

Why Makhana Works for Weight Loss

    • Volume per calorie. A 30g bowl looks like a big handful and costs ~104 kcal. The same calories in namkeen is a sad little scoop.
    • Near-zero fat. 0.1g per 100g — the calories come from starch, not oil.
    • Fibre + resistant starch. 7.6g fibre per 100g slows digestion and blunts the post-snack crash.
    • It's crunchy. Underrated. Most evening cravings are texture cravings, not hunger.

How Much Makhana Per Day for Weight Loss?

    GoalDaily amountCaloriesBest timing
    Active fat loss25–30 g~90–105 kcal5–7 PM, replacing a snack
    Maintenance30–50 g~105–175 kcalEvening or mid-morning
    Late-night craving fix15–20 g~50–70 kcalAfter dinner, plain

One handful is roughly 10–12g, so a "bowl" for most people lands at 25–35g. Weigh it once — you only need to see it once to calibrate your eye forever.

    Best Time to Eat Makhana

The 4–7 PM window, without competition. This is when most Indian diets break — the office biscuit, the samosa, the chips packet. Replacing that one item with makhana typically saves 150–250 calories a day, which is ~1 kg a month with no other change. That's an unglamorous number, and it's exactly why it works: it's sustainable.

Some people also eat makhana at bedtime — the magnesium (63mg per bowl) genuinely helps some sleepers. Keep it plain and small.

    A Simple 7-Day Swap Plan

    DayWhat to swapCalories saved
    1–2Evening biscuits → 30g plain makhana~120
    3–4Chips/namkeen → 30g ghee-roasted makhana~180
5–6Sweet after dinner → makhana kheer (no sugar, dates)~150

Four Mistakes That Cancel the Benefit

    • Eating from the packet. Makhana is light — 80g disappears without you noticing. That's 280 kcal.
    • Buying flavoured retail packs. Peri-peri and cheese variants add palm oil, maltodextrin and 400mg+ sodium. Roast your own.
    • Roasting in refined oil. Use 1 tsp of A2 ghee for a whole bowl, not a puddle of oil.
    • Treating it as a protein source. It's ~3g per bowl. Pair it with real protein — see the protein guide.

    Who Should Be Careful

If you have kidney disease (potassium load), or you're prone to constipation without enough water, keep portions modest and hydrate. Makhana is a food, not a treatment — if you have a diagnosed condition, your doctor's plan comes first.

    RootWell Mithila Makhana

Raw 5-suta makhana if you want to control the roast and the oil yourself — that's the version I use for portion-controlled evenings.
