How Our Roasted Ghee Makhana Is Made — the Traditional Way

Most "roasted makhana" sold online is tumble-roasted in industrial machines with refined or palm oil, then sprayed with flavour. Our A2 ghee fox nuts are made the way Muskan's family has always made them in Bihar — slowly, in iron kadhais, in batches of just 5 kg.

    • Pure A2 desi ghee — never oil. We roast only in A2 cow ghee from desi breeds (around ₹1,800/kg), never refined, sunflower or palm oil. Ghee adds gut-friendly short-chain fatty acids and a natural nutty aroma no oil can replicate.
    • Iron kadhai, low flame, 8–10 minutes. Each 5 kg batch is hand-stirred on a low flame for 8–10 minutes until every nut pops crisp from the inside out — without scorching. Machine roasting does this in 90 seconds and leaves the centre chewy.
    • Only sendha namak, nothing else. Seasoning is Himalayan rock salt (sendha namak) and a light dusting of traditional herbs. No MSG, no chilli powder masking, no artificial flavour — safe for kids, pregnancy and vrat-style eating.
    • Roasted, sealed, shipped within 14 days. Retail pouches often sit in warehouses for 4–9 months and lose crunch. Your pouch is roasted after you order, nitrogen-sealed the same day, and shipped pan-India within two weeks of roasting.

The result: roasted ghee makhana that stays crisp for 60 days sealed, tastes like it came off your grandmother's tawa, and carries the nutrition of GI-tagged 5-suta Mithila fox nuts — 9.7g protein, 14.5g fibre and a low glycemic index (~35) per 100g.

    ₹12per serving

Why ₹349? Here's exactly where your money goes.

Roasted Ghee Makhana costs more than supermarket brands for four clear, non-negotiable reasons:

    1

Pure A2 desi ghee — not refined oil

Farmley, Too Yumm and most "healthy" brands use olive oil, sunflower oil, or palm oil — cheaper, but missing the gut-healing SCFAs of real ghee. Our A2 ghee alone costs ₹1,800/kg.

    2

    100g pouch — not 77g jar trickery

Notice how most premium brands ship 77g jars priced at ₹194? That's ₹252/100g. We ship a full 100g pouch — read the back of the label before comparing prices.

    3

    5-suta Mithila GI nuts, hand-roasted

Industrial brands use 3-4 suta and tumble-roast in giant machines. We hand-roast 5kg batches in iron kadhais for 8-10 mins. Slower, costlier, crispier.

    4

Roasted within 14 days of shipping

Supermarket roasted makhana sits in warehouses 4-9 months — that stale, soft bite isn't makhana, it's old makhana. Ours is vacuum-sealed within 4 hours of roasting.

    What is Roasted Ghee Makhana?

Roasted Ghee Makhana is premium 5-suta Mithila fox nuts (the largest, crispiest grade) slow-roasted in pure A2 cow ghee with Himalayan rock salt. Unlike the puffed lotus seeds you may have eaten at temple prasad — which are raw — RootWell's version is ready-to-eat, vacuum-sealed for crunch, and seasoned with nothing but ghee and salt. It is the cleanest, most ancient evening snack India has — eaten in royal households for over 2,000 years long before chips and namkeen existed.

    From Bihar to Your Kitchen

How RootWell Ghee Makhana is Made

Every kilo of RootWell Roasted Ghee Makhana starts in the still-water ponds of Mithila — the Darbhanga–Madhubani belt of north Bihar that grows nearly 80% of India's makhana. We work directly with 8 farmer families who have been cultivating Euryale ferox (the lotus seed plant) for three generations. They harvest the seeds by hand from waist-deep water — a slow, painful job that machines still cannot replicate.

Only 5-suta and 6-suta grades make it into the RootWell batch. These are the largest, whitest, crispiest seeds — graded on a 1–7 scale where 7 is the biggest. Smaller grades (3-4 suta) sell at half the price but feel chewy and small in your mouth. We don't ship those.

The roasting happens in small 5-kg iron kadhais over a controlled flame. We use pure A2 cow ghee from a single dairy farm in Punjab — never refined oil, never palm oil, never margarine. Each batch is roasted for 8–10 minutes until the surface develops a golden tint, salted with Himalayan rock crystal, vacuum-sealed within 4 hours of roasting, and shipped within 14 days. That single difference is why our Roasted Makhana actually tastes like the one your grandmother made — not like supermarket plastic.

    FAQs — Roasted Ghee Makhana

Which is the best ready-to-eat roasted makhana brand in India?

RootWell Roasted Ghee Makhana is hand-crafted in small batches using pure A2 desi ghee and premium 5-suta Mithila (Bihar) fox nuts. Each batch is roasted, sealed and shipped within 14 days — most retail brands sit on shelves for 4–9 months and lose crunch and aroma.

Is ghee roasted makhana healthy as an evening snack?

Yes. A 30g serving has ~110 kcal vs ~160 kcal for chips, contains zero refined oil, and the ghee provides healthy short-chain fats. Makhana is gluten-free, low GI, has 9.7g protein per 100g, and is easier on digestion than fried namkeen, biscuits or chocolate bars.

What is the price of pure ghee roasted makhana?

RootWell Roasted Ghee Makhana is ₹349 for a 100g pouch (around ₹105 per 30g serving). Most commercial brands sell at ₹250–₹400 for 100g but use refined oil or palm oil. We use only A2 cow ghee, which is why we cost slightly more — and taste noticeably better.

How long does roasted ghee makhana stay fresh?

Each 100g pouch stays crisp for up to 60 days when sealed. Once opened, transfer to an airtight jar and finish within 10–15 days for the best crunch. Avoid storing near humidity — keep the jar away from the cooking range.

Is RootWell roasted makhana safe for kids and pregnant women?

Yes. Makhana is one of the safest traditional snacks in Indian cuisine — recommended in Ayurveda for pregnancy, lactation and weaning. Our roasted version uses only A2 ghee and Himalayan rock salt — no chilli, no MSG, no artificial flavour — making it suitable for children above 2 years and for pregnant or nursing women.

How many calories are in 30g of roasted ghee makhana?

A 30g serving of RootWell Roasted Ghee Makhana contains approximately 110 calories, 2.9g of protein, 1.5g of ghee fat (mostly heart-friendly SCFAs and MCTs), 23g of complex carbs and 4.4g of fibre. Compared to a 30g packet of chips (~160 kcal) or a 30g chocolate bar (~150 kcal), it's a meaningfully lighter snack.

Is roasted makhana good for weight loss?

Yes — makhana is one of the most weight-loss friendly Indian snacks. The protein and fibre combination keeps you full for 2–3 hours, the low glycemic index (~35) prevents sugar spikes, and a full handful is under 110 kcal. RootWell customers consistently report it as their go-to 4 PM swap that broke their biscuit and chips habit.

What makes Mithila 5-suta makhana different?

Makhana is graded by size on a 1–7 scale, with 7-suta being the largest. 5-suta is the premium edible grade — bigger, whiter, crunchier and more nutrient-dense than the smaller 3 or 4-suta grades you find in supermarkets. RootWell sources exclusively from Mithila (Darbhanga, Madhubani), the GI-tagged origin region that produces 80% of India's makhana.

Can diabetics eat roasted ghee makhana?

Yes — makhana has a low glycemic index (~35) and the ghee fat further slows sugar absorption. Diabetics can safely eat a 30g serving as a mid-morning or evening snack. It is one of the few Indian snacks that does not spike blood sugar.

What is the difference between roasted and raw makhana?

Raw makhana needs to be roasted at home before eating — most people skip this step or under-roast, leaving it chewy. RootWell Roasted Ghee Makhana is slow-roasted at the right temperature in A2 ghee for maximum crunch and nutrient retention, then vacuum-sealed for 60-day freshness. For people who cook with makhana (kheer, curries) we recommend our raw Mithila Makhana instead.

Is RootWell ghee makhana FSSAI certified?

Yes — RootWell holds FSSAI license #22622069000063. Our makhana also falls under GI Tag #461 for Mithila Makhana, registered with the Government of India for the Darbhanga–Madhubani region.

Why is RootWell pricier than Farmley, Too Yumm or BigBasket?

Three reasons. (1) We roast in pure A2 cow ghee — most brands use refined sunflower or palm oil at one-fourth the cost. (2) We ship full 100g pouches; Farmley's 'premium' jar is 77g priced higher per gram. (3) We hand-roast 5kg batches in iron kadhais — most brands tumble-roast tonnes at a time. The price gap is the ghee, the grade and the batch size.

How do I store roasted ghee makhana once opened?

Transfer to a wide-mouth airtight jar (glass preferred) and keep away from your cooking range. Heat and humidity are the only enemies. Eaten within 10–15 days of opening, the crunch stays at peak. If it ever softens, dry-roast on a tawa for 90 seconds.

Is ghee roasted makhana suitable for office tiffin and travel?

It's the ideal travel snack — non-perishable, no melting, no mess, light to carry. Office workers commonly keep one pouch at their desk to replace the 4 PM chips/biscuit habit. The 110 kcal per 30g serving plus 2.9g protein keeps you satisfied between meetings without a sugar crash.

Is ghee makhana suitable for vrat and festival days?

Yes — makhana is grain-free, so ghee-roasted makhana with sendha namak is eaten during Sawan Somvar, Navratri, Ekadashi and Maha Shivratri fasts. It also works as a light snack during Durga Puja and Diwali week when the food gets heavy.

Is the ghee in your makhana A1 or A2?

We use only pure A2 cow ghee from a single dairy farm in Punjab — never refined oil, never margarine, never A1 commercial ghee. A2 ghee is digested more easily, contains more beneficial short-chain fatty acids, and is the traditional ghee specified in Ayurveda. It also costs us ₹1,800/kg vs ₹600 for refined oil — the main reason our snack is priced premium.

Do you ship roasted ghee makhana across India?

Yes — we ship pan-India via tracked courier. Metro cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata) get delivery in 3–4 days. Tier-2 and tier-3 cities in 5–7 days. Free shipping above ₹1,499. Every pouch leaves vacuum-sealed within 14 days of roasting, so freshness is identical regardless of pin-code.

Is roasted ghee makhana vegetarian and gluten-free?

Yes — 100% vegetarian and naturally gluten-free. Ingredients: Mithila 5-suta makhana, A2 cow ghee, Himalayan pink salt. Nothing else. No wheat, no soy, no nuts, no artificial preservatives or flavours — safe for most allergy profiles and suitable for Jain diets (no onion/garlic).
