"Should I buy raw makhana and roast at home, or buy ready-roasted?" — this is the most common question I get on WhatsApp. Both are good. They serve different purposes. As a Mithila daughter who has eaten makhana every week of her life, here is my honest breakdown.

    When to Choose Raw Makhana

    • Weight loss / strict diet: You decide how much (or zero) ghee to add
    • Kheer, curries, snacks for kids: Cook them how you want
    • Long shelf life: Stays fresh 8–12 months sealed
    • Bulk freshness: Roast small batches as needed — never goes stale
    • Trust issues with brands: You see the raw ingredient yourself

    When to Choose Ghee-Roasted Makhana

    • Office / travel / kids' tiffin: Open and eat
    • No time to cook: Already perfectly crisp
    • Replacing chips / namkeen: Same convenience, infinitely better
    • Evening tea snack: Just pour into a bowl

    The Mistake Most People Make

They buy "ready-roasted" makhana from a random brand that uses palm oil, dalda, or artificial flavours — and then wonder why this "healthy snack" is making them gain weight. Always check the back of the pack. Real ghee-roasted makhana should have only 3 ingredients: makhana, desi ghee, rock salt. That is it.

    How I Personally Use Both

In my own kitchen I keep both. The raw pouch is for kheer, my baby's curry, and weekend evening snack (so I can decide ghee + salt). The ghee-roasted pouch lives in my husband's office drawer and travel bag — for him it replaced biscuits completely.

My honest recommendation: If you can only buy one — start with RootWell Raw Mithila Makhana. It gives you full control. If you live on the go, add a pouch of RootWell Ghee-Roasted Makhana alongside.
