How to Eat Makhana Daily: My Mithila Way (Quantity, Timing, Milk & More)

Founder, RootWell · Lost 20kg with Ayurveda · 5+ yrs in traditional digestive wellness, trained under family practitioners in Bihar.
I'm Muskan, and I was born and raised in Mithila, Bihar — the region where about 90% of India's makhana is grown. For us, makhana isn't a "superfood trend". It is everyday food. My nani roasted it in desi ghee, my mother packed it in my school tiffin, and after my pregnancy it became the snack that saved me from binge-eating biscuits at 5 PM.
So when people ask me "how should I eat makhana?", I tell them what I actually do — not what some influencer copy-pasted from a blog. Here is the honest, Mithila-style way.
How Much Makhana Should You Eat in a Day?
For most adults, a handful (around 30g) once or twice a day is the sweet spot. That's roughly 25–30 popped makhana pieces. It gives you about 100 kcal, ~3g protein, and keeps you full for 2–3 hours without making you feel heavy.
- Beginners: Start with one handful in the evening.
- Weight loss: Two handfuls — morning + evening — replacing biscuits and namkeen.
- Kids: 10–15 pieces, lightly roasted in a drop of ghee.
- Pregnancy: One small bowl a day (covered in a separate blog).
Best Time to Eat Makhana
In Ayurveda, makhana is laghu (light) and sheetal (cooling). That means it suits almost every time of day, but each timing gives a different benefit:
- Morning (empty stomach with milk): Best for strength and weight gain.
- Mid-morning snack: Stops the 11 AM tea-biscuit craving.
- Evening (4–6 PM): My personal favourite — replaces fried snacks.
- Bedtime (with warm milk): Helps with sleep and dryness.
How to Eat Makhana with Milk (Old Mithila Trick)
My nani's recipe: lightly roast 1 handful of makhana in ½ tsp ghee till crisp. Crush half of it. Boil 1 glass of milk, drop in the makhana, add a pinch of cardamom and a small piece of jaggery. Simmer 5 minutes. This is the original "protein shake" of Bihar — better for your gut than any whey powder I've tried.
3 Easy Daily Recipes I Actually Make
- Ghee-Roasted Makhana: 1 tsp ghee + 1 handful makhana + pinch of sendha namak + pinch of black pepper. 4 min on low flame. Done.
- Makhana Kheer (post-workout): Recipe above with milk.
- Masala Makhana (chai-time): Add chaat masala + curry leaves + crushed peanut after roasting.
One Thing I Always Tell People
Cheap small-size makhana doesn't pop properly — it stays leathery in the middle and gives gas. If you're eating makhana daily, invest in 5-suta (large grade) Mithila makhana. The size and source matter more than the brand. I personally use RootWell's 5-suta hand-popped makhana — same farmers my family has known for years.
My honest recommendation: Start with one handful tomorrow morning. Replace one packet of biscuits this week. In 30 days you'll notice the difference — less bloating, fewer cravings, lighter stomach. That is enough proof.
