When I delivered my first child, I gained 20kg. My skin broke out. My hair fell in clumps in the shower. My periods became irregular. Every doctor said "it will settle" — but it didn't. The thing that quietly helped me the most was not a supplement or a powder — it was the humble makhana my mother had been feeding me since childhood.

This is not a medical claim. I am not a doctor. I am just a Bihari girl who became a mother and went through what most Indian women in their 30s go through. This is what I noticed.

    1. Postpartum Recovery (My Personal Story)

In Bihar, mothers traditionally feed new mothers makhana kheer for 40 days after delivery. There is a reason. Makhana is high in calcium, magnesium, and easily-digested plant protein — exactly what a recovering body needs. I added one bowl daily for 3 months. My energy stabilised and my milk supply improved noticeably.

    2. PCOS, PCOD & Hormone Support

Makhana has a low glycemic index — meaning it doesn't spike insulin. Insulin spikes are one of the root drivers of PCOS. By swapping evening biscuits for a bowl of makhana, many women I know (including me) saw their cycles regularise within 3–4 months. Again, personal experience — not a cure claim.

    3. Skin Glow & Anti-Aging

Makhana contains kaempferol — a natural antioxidant linked to anti-inflammatory effects. My traditional theory: when your gut stops being inflamed, your skin clears up. I noticed it. My pigmentation lightened over 4–5 months of daily makhana.

    4. Hair Fall

Hair needs protein, iron and zinc. Makhana provides all three. Combined with daily curry leaves and amla water, my hair fall dropped to roughly half within 5–6 months.

    5. Weight Management

A handful of makhana = ~100 kcal vs a samosa = ~250 kcal. Over a year, replacing one fried evening snack with makhana saved me roughly 50,000 kcal. That is 6–7 kg of slow, sustainable loss without any "diet".

    6. Cooling Effect (Pitta Balance)

Indian women with acidity, mood swings during PMS, or hot flashes near perimenopause have a Pitta imbalance. Makhana is naturally cooling — Ayurveda has used it for centuries to calm Pitta. I notice my PMS irritability is much milder on weeks I eat it daily.

    How I Personally Use It

    • Morning: 1 small bowl makhana kheer with milk + cardamom
    • Evening (4 PM): 1 handful ghee-roasted makhana with masala chai
    • Period days: Makhana with warm milk + jaggery (eases cramps for me)

If you decide to try this, please use large-grade (5-suta) hand-popped makhana from Mithila — small chemically-processed makhana doesn't give the same benefits. I personally use the same farmer-sourced makhana my own family eats — that is what we sell as RootWell Raw Mithila Makhana.

Your body may respond differently from mine. Listen to it. Start with 30g a day for 30 days and see for yourself.
