Makhana Price List 2026 — Pack Sizes Compared
Makhana pricing varies wildly across brands because grading, popping method, and freshness are invisible to the buyer. Here's what genuine, hand-popped Mithila makhana actually costs in 2026:
| Pack Size | Honest Market Range | RootWell Price | Per-kg Equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100g | ₹180 – ₹350 | ₹299 | ₹2,990 / kg |
| 200g | ₹350 – ₹650 | ₹549 | ₹2,745 / kg |
| 250g | ₹420 – ₹800 | — | — |
| 500g | ₹800 – ₹1,400 | ₹1,049 (combo) | ₹2,098 / kg |
| 1kg | ₹1,500 – ₹2,400 | Custom (WhatsApp) | ₹1,800 / kg |
Prices reflect Suta-grade (largest, whitest pieces). Lower grades — Lawa, Murra, broken — sell for 30–50% less because they're commercial-grade, used in namkeen factories. Always ask the seller which grade you're buying.
Why Makhana Price Varies So Much (The Real Reason)
A 1kg pack on Amazon for ₹399 and a 1kg pack from a heritage brand for ₹2,200 — same product? Not even close. Five factors decide the real cost:
- Grade — Suta (premium, largest) vs Lawa vs Murra vs broken. Same farm, 3× price difference.
- Popping method — Traditional hand-popping costs ₹400–600/kg in labour alone. Machine-popped is cheaper but breaks more pieces.
- Freshness — Makhana lose puff and crisp within 6 months. Old stock sells cheap.
- Middlemen — Farm → trader → wholesaler → brand → e-commerce can add 3–4× markup.
- Adulteration — Cheap "makhana" sometimes mixes broken pieces, dust, or even talcum to add weight.
Makhana Grades Explained (What You're Actually Paying For)
Mithila farmers grade makhana by size after popping. The bigger and whiter the puff, the higher the grade — and the price:
| Grade | Size | Use | Price Range (per kg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suta (4+ Suta) | 24–30mm | Premium retail, gifting | ₹2,000 – ₹2,400 |
| Lawa | 18–24mm | Daily snacking | ₹1,400 – ₹1,800 |
| Murra | 12–18mm | Namkeen, bulk | ₹900 – ₹1,300 |
| Broken / Khichdi | < 12mm | Industrial, kheer | ₹400 – ₹700 |
RootWell sells only Suta-grade. We hand-grade every batch in Bihar before packing — which is why our 100g pack feels noticeably fuller and crunchier than supermarket alternatives.
How to Spot Fake or Old Makhana (Before You Pay)
Whether you're buying online or from a local kirana store, these five checks save you from getting cheated:
- 1Size uniformity — Real Suta is consistent. Mixed sizes mean blended grades sold as premium.
- 2Crisp test — Fresh makhana shatters cleanly. Old makhana bends or feels chewy.
- 3Color — Should be milky white, not grey or yellow-tinged.
- 4Aftertaste — No bitterness, no chemical smell.
- 5Source transparency — Genuine sellers will name the Mithila district (Darbhanga, Madhubani, Purnia). Generic "Indian makhana" is a red flag.
"My nani used to say: "Asli makhana ko dant nahi chahiye, mooh me ghul jaata hai." That's still the best test."

Why RootWell is Priced This Way (Founder Note)
I'm Muskan, founder of RootWell. I grew up in Bihar watching makhana farming up close. Before starting RootWell, I worked in corporate roles in metro cities where I saw two patterns: people overpaying for fancy-packaged broken-grade makhana from supermarkets, OR underpaying for industrial leftovers on bulk sites — and assuming all makhana tastes the same.
We're priced at ₹299/100g because that's what fair pays the farmer, covers hand-grading, and gets premium Suta to your door without a middleman markup. Not the cheapest. Not the costliest. The honest price.
