Sattu Protein: How Much in 100g & Why It Suits Indian Bodies Better Than Whey

Founder, RootWell · Lost 20kg with Ayurveda · 5+ yrs in traditional digestive wellness, trained under family practitioners in Bihar.
For about 6 months I drank whey protein every morning. Everyone said it was the gold standard. What I got was bloating, acne and constant mild constipation. Then a friend's mother asked me — "beta, sattu kyun nahi peeti?" Within 2 weeks of switching, my skin cleared, my bloating disappeared, and I was still hitting my protein target. Here's why.
How Much Protein Is in Sattu?
Pure roasted chana (black chickpea) sattu — which is what real sattu is — naturally contains approximately 20–25g of protein per 100g. That is roughly 5–6g protein per 2-tbsp serving (25g).
For context: 100g paneer = ~18g protein. 100g eggs = ~13g protein. So 100g of sattu out-proteins both — and it's vegan, room-temperature stable, and costs a fraction.
Sattu vs Whey Protein (My Honest Comparison)
| Factor | Sattu | Whey |
|---|---|---|
| Protein per 25g serving | ~5–6g | ~22g |
| Cost per serving | ~₹6 | ~₹70–100 |
| Fiber | High (10g/100g) | Zero |
| Bloating (my experience) | None | Frequent |
| Acne (my experience) | None | Yes |
| Source | Indian farms | Imported, dairy-processed |
| Shelf life without fridge | 6 months | Varies |
Why Sattu Suits Indian Bodies Better
- Lactose-free — 60% of Indian adults are lactose intolerant; whey makes us bloated.
- Fiber-rich — whey has zero. Sattu's fiber feeds your good gut bacteria.
- Cooling — perfect for India's climate. Whey is heating.
- Slow-release protein — keeps you full 4–6 hours vs whey's 1–2.
- Whole food — not isolated, not processed in a factory.
My Personal Daily Protein Stack
2 tbsp sattu at 7 AM (6g) + dal-roti lunch (15g) + paneer/curd snack (10g) + dal-veg dinner (12g) = ~43g — perfect for a 55kg woman. No powder, no shake, no acne.
One Important Catch
All the numbers above assume 100% pure chana sattu. If your sattu is 50% barley filler, you're getting half the protein. Always check ingredients — it should say only one word: "roasted chana / Bengal gram". RootWell's pure chana sattu is the one I personally use.
My take: If you're spending ₹3000 a month on whey and not feeling great, try a 1-month switch to pure sattu (₹400 a month). You can always go back. I never did.
