Sattu sharbat is the original Indian electrolyte drink. In my home in Bihar, the moment the temperature crossed 38°C, my father would pull out the sattu jar. One glass before stepping out in the sun was non-negotiable. No "ORS" packets needed.

Here are the three exact recipes my family uses — passed down, nothing fancy. You can make any of them in under 3 minutes.

Recipe 1: Salty Sattu Sharbat (Classic Bihar Style)

This is the one we drink every summer morning. Cooling, salty, instantly hydrating.

    • 2 tbsp pure chana sattu
    • 1 glass cold water (room temp if you have a sensitive stomach)
    • ½ tsp roasted jeera powder
    • ¼ tsp black salt (kala namak)
    • ¼ tsp regular salt
    • 1 tsp lemon juice
    • 1 small green chilli (chopped fine) — optional
    • 2–3 pudina leaves

Whisk sattu in a little water first to remove lumps, then add the rest. Drink immediately. Keeps you full for 4–5 hours.

Recipe 2: Sweet Sattu Sharbat (Kids & Workouts)

    • 2 tbsp pure chana sattu
    • 1 glass cold milk OR cold water
    • 1 tbsp jaggery powder (or 2 tsp honey)
    • ¼ tsp cardamom powder
    • Pinch of salt (this is the secret — don't skip)

My son drinks this after every cricket practice. Better than any "protein shake" in the market.

Recipe 3: My Weight-Loss Sattu Drink

This is what I personally drink at 7 AM on the days I want to lose weight. It killed my breakfast cravings completely.

    • 2 tbsp pure chana sattu
    • 1 glass lukewarm water
    • 1 tsp lemon juice
    • 1 tsp soaked methi seed water (optional but powerful)
    • Pinch of black salt, pinch of jeera powder
    • No sweetener, no chilli

Drink slowly, 30 min before any breakfast. I lost 6kg in 4 months doing this 5 days a week — no other diet change.

The One Thing That Decides Whether This Works

Your sattu must be 100% pure chana sattu. Most market sattu has 30–50% besan, barley or roasted maize mixed in to cut cost. That fake sattu won't keep you full, won't give you the protein, and will probably give you gas. I learned this the hard way before I started making my own pure single-ingredient sattu.

My honest tip: Try Recipe 3 for 21 days. Same time every morning. If you don't notice less hunger, more energy, and a flatter stomach — I'll be surprised.
